The name
The fresh atmosphere of these famous mountains, is filled with finely dispersed droplets of oil from the thousands of Eucalyptus trees. This oil mist and the forest ‘s water vapour, scatter short wave of light to create the distinctive blue haze, that saw the name change from ‘Landsdowne Hills’ by Governor Phillip in 1788, to the name that soon followed ‘Blue Mountains’.
The geology & landscape
The foothills of the Blue Mountains begin 65Km inland west of Sydney, and rise to flat-topped plateaus and sheer rich yellow cliffs as high as 1100metres above sea level.
The mountains were formed by the uplift forces occuring more than 200million years ago, and following that water created today’s Australian Grand Canyon in the Blue Mountains National Park. Meandering rivers plunged deep and narrow gorges cut and dissected these very old rocks until there were only some stubborn peaks left behind such as the Three Sisters or Mount Solitary, and vast valleys lie beneath such as the Jamison Valley 350m below, with its mystical forests of lush prehistoric ferns, ancient Eucalyptus and wildlife.
